I was looking into this. You can definitely build an aluminum extrusion rig cheaper under the right circumstances.

1) Shipping costs add up. Most sim racing companies have come to agreements with shipping providers. The dimensions and weight of pre-made bundles have been optimized to accommodate for easier shipment.

For DIY you will run into one of two issues if you need to ship it.

  • Prohibitive shipping costs due to the dimensions the aluminum extrusion comes in.
  • You will have to pay for the pieces to be cut to size for easier shipping. This has added cost.

If you can avoid this, you have points in your favor.

2) Buying the attachments you want can be expensive. Most bundles these days come with a few accessories that you might want. If you find yourself wanting to buy some accessories you will want to factor them in when you are comparing costs of DIY vs. pre-made. Most accessories are quite a bit more expensive if not bought in a bundle which often includes the rig.

On the other hand, you have the flexibility to just get what you want. If you are handy you can also make your own attachments. I've seen lots of great stuff made from wood. Even saw someone use an Ikea dinner tray once and it turned out well. If you own a 3d printer you can print parts for the rig easily.

3) There is a higher time cost to planning and executing a DIY build vs. a pre-made.

4) You have no warranty on your rig. This easily adds a few hundred dollars in value.

5) If it's your first build you will make mistakes that will cost money. It might be negligible or or might be costly. But you will make mistakes.

6) There are alternatives to aluminum extrusion rig. The alternatives have been getting better and less expensive. Some even have cool features aluminum extrusion rigs can't even have without major modifications.

7) Aluminum extrusion is quite versatile. If you ever get bored Sim racing you could always repurpose the aluminum. Of course custom aluminum would be better in this case.

Hope this helps your decision! Its the information I used to make mine. I'm sure I'm missing some stuff. Please feel free to add on to this list. Have a nice day! Hope you get your rig soon.
