Forza Horizon 6 Gameplay Revealed: IGN Shows First Look at the Massive Japan Map

IGN has recently published an exclusive pre release gameplay video for Forza Horizon 6, giving us our first proper look at the game in motion. Rather than focusing on competitive racing, the footage presents a long uninterrupted drive across several regions of the map. This approach makes it easier to observe the scale of the world, the environmental transitions, and a number of smaller gameplay details that were not immediately obvious in earlier trailers.

The drive begins in the southern countryside and gradually moves through several distinct environments before reaching the outskirts of Tokyo. After circling parts of the city, the journey concludes near what appears to be a permanent race circuit. The entire sequence plays out as a relaxed cruise, clearly designed to highlight the open world rather than intense racing action.

While the video itself is relatively simple in structure, it reveals quite a lot about how Forza Horizon 6 is shaping up.


A World Designed Around Natural Transitions

One of the main goals of the gameplay showcase is demonstrating how seamlessly the map transitions between different environments. As the car travels across the world, the surroundings change gradually rather than abruptly.

The opening section takes place on narrow countryside roads surrounded by fields and small villages. From there the route climbs into more mountainous terrain, where dense forests and winding roads begin to dominate the scenery. Eventually the environment opens up again as highways and large roads begin leading toward the outskirts of Tokyo.

From a visual standpoint the transitions feel natural and believable. The world does not appear to be divided into obvious biome segments. Instead the landscape evolves organically as you continue driving. This approach makes the map feel significantly larger than it might appear at first glance.

During the journey, several well known Japanese landmarks can also be spotted in the distance. Mount Fuji in particular is visible from multiple angles throughout the drive, reinforcing the sense that the map has been built around recognizable locations.


Region Discovery System

One of the most noticeable gameplay additions appears when the player crosses into a new area of the map. Whenever a previously undiscovered region is entered, a new graphic appears at the top of the screen to announce the discovery.

This system seems to divide the map into identifiable regions rather than simply relying on road discovery. It adds an additional layer of progression to free roaming, encouraging players to explore different parts of the world rather than staying within familiar areas.

The animation used for the region discovery notification also looks clean and modern, matching the updated interface style that the developers appear to be introducing with this entry.


Improved Minimap Discovery

Exploring roads has always been a major part of the Forza Horizon formula. In previous games, however, discovering every road could become frustrating, especially in areas with complex layouts or tight urban streets.

Forza Horizon 6 introduces a small but important improvement to this system. Instead of only discovering the exact road segment you are currently driving on, the game now reveals nearby roads within a certain radius around the car.

This means that players will no longer have to drive down every tiny side street just to complete the discovery percentage. The change should make exploration feel more natural while still rewarding players who actively search for hidden areas.


Story Connections and Day Trips

The gameplay footage also reveals a new discovery related to the game’s career structure.

One of the gameplay moments in the IGN video shows the player unlocking what seems to be one of many activities, this one referred to as a “day trip”. A special graphic appears on screen to indicate that the experience has been discovered.

Although the footage does not go into much detail about the activity itself, it suggests that exploration will play a direct role in unlocking story content. Rather than simply completing races, players may progress by visiting new regions and discovering unique locations.


Subtle Improvements to Vehicle Effects

Another detail that stood out in the gameplay involves the behavior of the Saleen S7 featured in the video. When the car coasts or shifts gears, occasional misfires can be heard from the exhaust. While this is pretty normal for every racing game, Forza Horizon 6 adds a tiny but special detail.

In previous Forza Horizon titles, misfires almost always produced exaggerated flames from the exhaust. While visually impressive, this effect often felt overly arcade like and unrealistic.

In the new gameplay footage the effect appears to be toned down. Misfires still occur, but they do not always produce visible flames. When flames do appear they are smaller and less exaggerated, making the effect feel more authentic.

This might seem like a minor visual change, but it highlights the level of attention to detail the developers are putting into the overall presentation. For car enthusiasts, subtle realism improvements like this can make a noticeable difference.


A Map Built Around Multiple Biomes

The route shown in the gameplay clip travels through several different environmental styles. Each biome has its own visual identity and road layout, giving players a variety of driving experiences within a single map.

Throughout the drive the footage showcases rural countryside roads, forested mountain routes, highways approaching Tokyo, and dense urban areas on the edge of the city.

These shifts in environment also influence the atmosphere of the drive. The countryside sections feel relaxed and open, while the mountain roads introduce tighter corners and elevation changes. As the route approaches Tokyo the road network becomes wider and more structured, preparing the player for high speed cruising on larger highways.

The combination of these environments suggests that the map will offer plenty of variety for both casual cruising and faster driving.


A Stronger Focus on Free Roaming

One of the most interesting design directions mentioned by the developers is the increased focus on what they call “vibe driving”.

Instead of always pushing players toward competitive races or structured events, the game includes experiences specifically designed for players who simply want to cruise around the map.

This means that exploring scenic roads, discovering new regions, and enjoying the atmosphere of the world will be a more central part of the gameplay loop. The long uninterrupted cruise shown in the IGN footage is a clear example of this philosophy.

For many players this could become one of the most appealing aspects of Forza Horizon 6, especially given the scenic setting of Japan.


The Main Controversy From the Gameplay

Shortly after the video was published, one particular detail sparked discussion within the community. Many viewers noticed that the roads appeared almost empty, with very little traffic present during the drive.

Some players initially worried that the world might feel lifeless as a result. However IGN later clarified that the reduced traffic density was intentional for the demo.

The purpose of the showcase was to highlight the environment and map design without distractions. According to IGN, the final version of the game will feature normal traffic levels during regular gameplay.

If this statement holds true, the emptier roads seen in the preview should not represent the actual experience players will have at launch.


First Impressions

While the gameplay video does not reveal every detail about Forza Horizon 6, it provides a strong first impression of the game’s direction. The map appears significantly larger, the environmental transitions look more natural, and several quality of life improvements have been introduced for exploration.

The focus on cruising and free roaming also aligns well with what many players enjoy most about the Horizon series. Combined with a detailed representation of Japan and a variety of distinct driving environments, the game could deliver one of the most immersive open world maps the franchise has seen so far.

As more gameplay footage and developer information become available, it will be interesting to see how these features evolve leading up to release.
