How does loadcell work and why is everyone using it?

I used my Fanatec CSL pedals for some time now and people suggested I should upgrade to loadcell. But I’m tight on budget and don’t see why I should because I’m quite comfortable with my current pedals. What are the reasons that loadcell might be better and why might it be worth the upgrade?

Hey, good question.

A load cell brake can be worth it even if you’re comfortable now because it usually improves consistency more than it improves raw “feel.” Your CSL brake in stock form is mostly travel-based, so small differences in where your foot lands, how far the pedal moves, or how your rig flexes can change braking each lap, while a load cell measures force, so you build muscle memory around pressure and can hit the same braking point more reliably. That tends to translate into smoother trail braking, fewer accidental lockups or ABS spikes, and better confidence in heavy braking zones, especially once you start pushing closer to the limit.

The main reasons not to upgrade are valid too: if you’re on a desk setup or a flexy stand, you might not be able to apply consistent force, and if you mostly cruise or play casually, the difference won’t feel game-changing. But if you’re chasing lap time, consistency, and racecraft on a budget, a CSL load cell add-on is one of the highest impact upgrades you can make without changing your whole ecosystem.
