Fanatec Gran Turismo DD PRO 8Nm base for PlayStation and PCvsThrustmaster T598 Direct Axial Drive Servo Base (Playstation / PC)

The Bottom Line

The battle for PlayStation-compatible direct drive supremacy pits Fanatec's established ecosystem against Thrustmaster's high-torque, budget-friendly newcomer. While one offers a mature but flawed platform, the other promises raw performance at a lower price point but suffers from notable first-generation teething issues.

Watch out

Both wheelbases suffer from frustrating firmware update bugs that can cause connection issues or software detection failures. Furthermore, the Fanatec base features fragile RJ12 ports prone to dropouts, while the Thrustmaster T598 runs very hot during long sessions, leading to force feedback fade and random mid-race disconnections.

Note

To get the best experience out of the Fanatec GT DD Pro, budget for an official Fanatec QR2 quick release upgrade to eliminate the mechanical play of the stock QR1 Lite. Meanwhile, the Thrustmaster T598 can be upgraded within its own ecosystem, which is highly recommended given the cheap, plasticky feel of its bundled rim and pedals.

Why choose Fanatec Gran Turismo DD PRO 8Nm base for PlayStation and PC

7.8
Overall Score
  • Superior Max Rotation and Mounting: Offers a massive 2520 degrees of rotation and versatile bottom and side mounting options.
  • Excellent Passive Cooling: The aluminum housing keeps the base completely silent and cool without any thermal throttling or force feedback fade.

Why choose Thrustmaster T598 Direct Axial Drive Servo Base (Playstation / PC)

7.5
Overall Score
  • Higher Peak Torque and Lighter Weight: Delivers a stronger 10 Nm of torque in a lighter 4.7 kg package.
  • Smooth Axial Drive FFB: Provides cogging-free force feedback and immersive high-frequency effects at a lower starting price of $399.99.

The Verdict

If you value a cool-running, reliable thermal design and a mature ecosystem, the Fanatec GT DD Pro remains the safer bet despite its higher price. However, if you want maximum torque per dollar and can overlook heat buildup and fragile USB connections, the Thrustmaster T598 offers impressive force feedback depth.
