Sim racing · head‑to‑head
Choosing between these two entry-level direct drive bundles comes down to whether you want a bare-minimum entry point or a stronger wheelbase that prevents immediate buyer's remorse. While both transition you away from noisy gear-driven wheels, their real-world performance and thermal limits set them apart.
Both wheelbases suffer from heat buildup during long sessions, which can lead to force feedback fade or thermal throttling. Additionally, the lightweight SR-P Lite pedals in the R3 bundle are prone to sliding and lifting off the floor unless you hard-mount them.
The SR-P Lite pedals connect directly to the wheelbase, meaning upgrading your base later requires replacing both components or purchasing an official adapter. However, you can improve the mushy pedal feel on either bundle using MOZA's official performance mod.
With a current price of $297.08 compared to the R3 at $278.81, the R5 bundle is the undisputed choice for almost any sim racer. It delivers a superior 5.5 Nm of torque, which provides the necessary headroom to avoid the immediate upgrade itch that plagues R3 owners.
While both systems offer a massive leap in detail over older belt-driven hardware, the R3's 3.9 Nm limit is simply too easy to outgrow. Paying a tiny premium for the R5 secures a much more viable long-term direct drive experience.
