HOW I TESTED

REVIEW UNIT: Apevie review sample

TESTING TIME: Several hours

Some products announce their quality the moment you pick them up. They feel right, they look right, and the attention to detail is obvious before you ever use them. That is exactly the feeling you get with the Soelpec Terra LX, a German-made sim racing wheel that, despite looking fairly ordinary, makes you feel something special the moment you open the box and put your hands on it.

It is a relatively understated wheel. There is no screen, no aggressive styling, and nothing about its appearance screams for attention. What it offers instead is materials, refinement, and engineering that you appreciate the moment you start driving. This review covers what you get for the money, and whether the finer details justify a genuinely premium price.

Apevie sent this product to me for review.

Unboxing and First Impressions

The premium impression starts before the wheel itself. Inside the box you get a personalized message, a thank you card, Soelpec stickers, and additional stickers to further customize the buttons, alongside the wheel itself. It feels, and honestly even smells, like a premium product.

The box includes a personalized welcome card, a thank you card, and stickers to customize the buttons.

None of that changes how the wheel drives, but it sets the tone for everything that follows: this is a product where the small details have been thought about.

Design and Build Quality

The Terra LX measures 297 mm in diameter, which is a perfect size for a GT-style wheel. It is made entirely of anodized aluminum and weighs 1,350 grams, properly weighted without being too heavy or feeling cheaply light.

The silicone grips are a highlight on their own. They are thick without being too thick, very grippy without feeling sticky, and they are the most comfortable grips I have used on any wheel. I could go on about them, but the short version is that they just feel nice, every time you pick the wheel up.

The overmolded silicone grips are thick, very grippy, and never feel sticky.

The other surprise is how thin the wheel is. Viewed from the top or bottom, the overall width is less than an inch, and the amount of functionality Soelpec has packed into that slim profile is remarkable given how much hardware is on board.

Buttons and Inputs

On the front of the wheel you get 13 buttons, 2 seven-way switches, 4 central rotary encoders, 2 thumb encoders, and 10 telemetry LEDs. Absolutely everything is backlit with RGB lighting, and there are two additional buttons on the back of the wheel as well.

Every button and encoder is backlit, with 10 telemetry LEDs across the top of the wheel.

On paper it is a strong input count for a wheel this size. In practice it is the customization behind those inputs that turns out to be one of this wheel’s main selling points.

Customization and SimHub

Customization is a headline feature of the Terra LX. Using SimHub, you can customize virtually every aspect of the wheel, from individual RGB colors and telemetry-based lighting effects to the way the buttons and encoders actually function. The software and plugin run entirely on SimHub, and Soelpec has done a great job with it.

The four central rotaries can act as traditional encoders or as switches with up to 12 individual positions, while the thumb encoders support multiple control layers, giving you up to 136 possible inputs. Yes, 136 inputs on a single steering wheel.

The four central rotaries work as encoders or 12-position switches, and every color is set per control in SimHub.

You also get customizable clutch bite points, adjustable shifter resistance, interchangeable rotary knobs, and a dedicated settings button that lets you change configurations directly on the wheel. The customization is virtually endless, and it is all configured through the one SimHub plugin.

Paddle Shifters and Clutches

On the back of the wheel, alongside the two extra buttons, sit dual analog clutch paddles and Soelpec’s new DuoACT magnetic paddle shifters, which are more interesting than most. You can adjust both the paddle position and the resistance, and the shifters feature both a traditional tactile switch and an adjustable Hall-effect sensor, meaning you can customize exactly how your shifts register.

The DuoACT magnetic shifters pair a tactile switch with an adjustable Hall-effect sensor.

The clutch paddles are also fully programmable, with adjustable bite points, solid resistance, and ample travel. Between the shifters and the clutches, the rear of this wheel offers more tuning than most wheels offer anywhere.

Compatibility and Connection

For mounting, you get a standard 70 mm bolt pattern with an included 32 mm hub, so the Terra LX works with most major direct drive wheelbases, provided you have the appropriate quick release for your base.

The slim rear profile: the included 32 mm hub uses the standard 70 mm mounting pattern.

Connection is handled through an included coiled USB cable, or through USB passthrough for compatible wheelbases, which eliminates the external cable entirely. Compatibility is essentially universal on PC, although console users are, as usual, out of luck.

Driving Impressions

All put together, this wheel really is a pleasure to race with. It maintains a simple formula, but it absolutely nails it. The ergonomics are fantastic, with naturally positioned controls and easy-to-reach paddles, and the grips are genuinely the best I have ever used. They remain exceptionally comfortable even during longer racing sessions, grippy without feeling sticky or attracting dust, and the positioning of the buttons, encoders, and paddles makes everything easy to reach without readjusting your hands.

The paddle shifters are equally impressive on track, delivering a sharp, satisfying, tactile click with every gear change. The buttons on the front feel premium too, with consistent actuation and none of that cheap, hollow feeling you get on some other wheels.

Driving with the Soelpec Terra LX, telemetry lights lit
On track it feels special: everything in reach, zero flex, and force feedback that comes through cleanly.

After several hours of putting this wheel to its limits, the thing I cannot emphasize enough is how solid and refined everything feels. There is absolutely zero noticeable flex anywhere, even when deliberately pushing and pulling against the rim. At just 1,350 grams, the force feedback comes through cleanly and clearly, with no unnecessary weight bogging down the finer details, which gives a very planted feel. The RGB lighting effects are vibrant and at times genuinely useful, bringing the wheel to life without being overly distracting.

That is what I like most about the Terra LX. It does not rely on a ridiculous design, an oversized screen, or aggressive styling to impress. It is a relatively understated wheel, but the moment you put your hands on it and start driving, you can immediately appreciate the quality, the attention to detail, and the engineering that went into it. It just feels expensive, in all the right ways.

Two nitpicks are worth noting. The paddle shifters are on the clickier, and therefore louder, side. And I do not love that the buttons come with pre-applied stickers: leaving them blank and letting users fine-tune the labeling from scratch makes more sense to me. Neither is close to a dealbreaker.

Price and Value

The Terra LX sells for $1,199 at Apevie in the US, or €879 directly from Soelpec, and code OCRACING takes 5% off at both. It is definitely a premium product with a premium price tag, and being honest, this is a considerable amount of money to spend on a wheel, especially when there are genuinely excellent alternatives available for significantly less.

While the Terra LX offers exceptional build quality, functionality, and customization, I do not necessarily think you are getting twice the experience of a wheel costing half as much. What you are paying for is the finer things: the materials, the refinement, and a level of attention to detail that, frankly, not everyone is going to appreciate or even care about. That is perfectly fine, but it is the right way to think about the price.

FINAL VERDICT

Recommendation: Recommended

Ideal buyer: A sim racer who wants a premium, no-nonsense GT wheel and values feel, materials, and customization over screens and styling.

Major drawback: The $1,199 US price, and not everyone will value the details it buys.

Bottom Line: One of my favorite wheels I have tested to date. It focuses on the things that actually matter when you are driving, and executes them exceptionally well.
