Sim-Lab Mercedes AMG F1 Wheel Review: An Insanely Authentic Replica Almost No One Needs

The Sim-Lab Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula 1 Team Steering Wheel is arguably one of the coolest sim racing products released in recent memory. It is a licensed, one-to-one replica of Lewis Hamilton’s actual F1 wheel, developed directly with the Mercedes Formula 1 team. It also costs around $2,700 before taxes and shipping. So yes, it is ridiculous, it is incredible, and it is absolutely not necessary for 99 percent of sim racers.

That said, it is also one of the most important sim racing products ever made, and I do not say that lightly.

Build Quality and Realism

From the moment you unbox it, it is obvious this is not just another high end wheel. Sim-Lab worked closely with Mercedes, using CAD files from the real car, sourcing many of the same encoders and components, and even recreating details that have no real purpose in sim racing. There is a bolt on the underside that exists purely because it is there on the real car. The lever on the clutch paddle is made from carbon fiber because Mercedes insisted on it.

This obsession with authenticity makes the wheel feel less like a consumer product and more like a piece of race car hardware that has been allowed into your sim room. Everything about it screams realism.

The case is made from hand laid carbon fiber, and the overall finish is flawless. The weave is clean, the edges are precise, and there is no creaking, flex, or cheapness to be found anywhere. It genuinely looks and feels like an F1 part that has been lifted off the car and wired for USB.

Ergonomics and Size

In terms of ergonomics, it is exactly what you would expect from a wheel designed for Formula 1. The layout is not just good, it is dialed in for performance at the very highest level. Lewis Hamilton himself worked with Mercedes F1 over the last decade to design this wheel to be perfect, and it shows.

The wheel is 280 mm in diameter, which is realistic for an F1 style rim. It weighs about 1,240 grams, or roughly 2.5 pounds, which is impressively light considering the amount of hardware packed into it. That low weight pays off in how it feels on track, letting your direct drive base deliver all its detail without being bogged down by a heavy rim.

Every button, rotary, and thumb encoder is within easy reach. You do not need to overextend or reposition your hands to adjust settings mid corner. The ergonomics are a direct reflection of real Formula 1 design: efficient, compact, and brutally focused on performance.

Sim-Lab also includes a sticker sheet so you can label the buttons just like the real car. Combined with the overall layout, it helps complete the illusion that you are holding an actual F1 wheel, not a watered down “inspired by” version.

Display and Software

Front and center is a 4.3 inch display that is bright, sharp, and extremely responsive. It supports both SimHub for full customization and Sim-Lab’s own software with pre-made layouts, including official Mercedes F1 style dashboards.

The screen has essentially nothing wrong with it. It is quick to update, readable at a glance, and looks fantastic when lit up on the grid. It is exactly the kind of display you would expect on a wheel of this level and price.

Handles and Grip

The handles are where Sim-Lab has done something genuinely special. They are molded from a rubber silicone material that they claimed would feel unlike anything you have tried before. That sounded like typical marketing at first, but in this case, it is true.

These are easily some of the best feeling grips I have ever used on a sim racing wheel. They are smooth, soft, and extremely grippy without feeling sticky. There is a real sense of confidence when you hold them, even without gloves. The shape itself is not dramatically different from other F1 rims, but the material choice puts them on another level.

The downside of this kind of rubber is that it attracts dust and debris. To protect the wheel, I have been using a Sim Shield formula wheel cover when it is not in use, and I would recommend something similar for anyone buying a wheel this expensive.

Paddle Shifters and Clutch

Around the back, things get even more interesting. The paddle shifters are made entirely from carbon fiber and are extremely thin. This design means you will mostly be actuating them with your index fingers rather than your whole hand. Some people will love that, others may prefer wider paddles.

They use magnets for a crisp feel, but remain fairly quiet compared to many aftermarket shifters. The travel and click are satisfying and can be adjusted, which is important at this level.

One of the nicest aspects of the shifters is the rocking mechanism. The shifter assembly is linked, so you can upshift or downshift with either hand by pushing one side forward or pulling the other back. That is incredibly convenient when you are mid adjustment on a rotary or grabbing a drink.

The single clutch paddle is also a direct replica of what Mercedes used. It has light resistance, adjustable travel, and a shape that sits comfortably under your fingers. It is not a traditional double clutch system like many sim specific wheels offer, but again, this is about authenticity rather than ticking every sim racing feature box.

Compatibility

Despite its real world F1 pedigree, the wheel remains practical in terms of mounting. It uses a standard 70 mm bolt pattern, which means it can be mounted to essentially any modern direct drive base with the right hub or quick release.

That includes bases from Fanatec, Moza, Simagic, Asetek, and other popular brands, as long as you use a compatible adapter. Connection to the PC is handled with an included braided USB cable that plugs into the rear of the wheel.

This makes the wheel broadly usable, even if you do not own Sim-Lab hardware, and it also means you can keep your preferred base while upgrading to this wheel as a statement piece.

On-track Performance

Force feedback performance will always depend mostly on your wheelbase, but what this wheel does exceptionally well is transmit every detail your base outputs.

Because of the low weight, stiff construction, and quality of the components, nothing feels muted or dampened. Subtle road texture, small corrections, kerb detail, and weight transfer all come through cleanly. The wheel feels like a very transparent link between the base and your hands rather than a filter.

Owners and reviewers have consistently pointed out that this wheel lets their base shine, and I agree. If your direct drive base is already strong and detailed, this wheel will let you feel everything it is capable of delivering.

Drawbacks and Practical Limitations

For all its strengths, it is important to be honest: this real F1 wheel has real compromises as a sim racing product. Those compromises exist because it is chasing realism above all else.

From a pure sim perspective, it is missing a few things many people would consider basic at this price. There are no seven way joysticks for navigating menus, no backlit buttons for night racing, no touch screen, and no third set of paddles for extra functions. There are other high end wheels on the market that offer more flexibility, more inputs, and more sim oriented features.

If you look at top tier F1 inspired wheels from brands like Ascher, Gomez Sim Industries, or premium options from Fanatec, you will find products that are still expensive, but often more practical for regular sim use. They may not carry the same level of real world authenticity, but they can be better tools if your focus is on function rather than replication.

Final Thoughts: a Functional Piece of Art

In the end, the Sim-Lab Mercedes AMG F1 wheel is a product that makes no effort to be sensible. It is extremely expensive, highly specialized, and missing some features that many sim racers would consider essential at this price.

Yet at the same time, it is also one of the most significant sim racing products ever created. It is a true one to one replica of a top tier Formula 1 steering wheel, built with direct involvement from the team that uses it in real life. Every design choice prioritizes authenticity and immersion over convenience and mass appeal.

You do not buy this wheel because it is objectively the best value, or because it offers the most features. You buy it because you want something special on your rig, something that feels like a piece of motorsport history sitting in front of you. It is a functional piece of art that just happens to also be an excellent racing tool.

If you want maximum practicality, there are other wheels that make more sense and will cost you far less. But if you are chasing the most authentic Formula 1 experience possible at home, this is about as close as sim racing has ever come.
