The Wheel Nobody Asked For

I am going to say the quiet part out loud. This is a steering wheel that nobody asked for.

It is based on a futuristic electric concept race car, and if you are the type of sim racer who lives for loud engines and analog vibes, the Mission R is not exactly the poster child for that. But here is the thing. Even if you never cared about the real car, the sim racing version of this wheel is still a very impressive piece of hardware.

When Moza first teased it, it grabbed the entire sim community’s attention. Some people loved it instantly, some people laughed at it, and others were just curious. Now that it is actually out, I can say it lived up to the hype in the two areas that matter most for a product like this: design and tech.

On track, it genuinely feels like driving a spaceship. That is obviously the point, and Moza absolutely nailed that part of the experience.

Packaging and Presentation

The experience does not start when you load into a session. It starts the moment you open the box.

The Mission R wheel is presented like a premium product, and it feels special in a way most sim hardware does not. Some of that is branding, some of it is the price, but a lot of it is simply the fact that it looks unlike anything else in the space.

Moza also claims this wheel was made using original CAD data provided by Porsche, meaning it is intended to be a near 1:1 replica of the real concept wheel. Whether you care about that detail or not, it does show in the overall design language and the way everything fits together.

Build Quality and Materials

The entire housing of the Mission R wheel is made from CNC-machined aluminum, and it feels exactly like what you would expect from a wheel at this price. It is solid, dense, and built to take abuse.

Visually, the design is insane. The screen looks like it is floating. Some of the button elements look like they are hovering as well. And the biggest headline feature is right in the center of it all: the curved display.

A curved screen on a sim racing wheel is still a rare thing. This is one of the first wheels I have used where the screen alone looks like a flex before you even turn a lap.

In terms of rigidity, there is no meaningful flex, no creaking, and no weird movement. The wheel feels rock solid, and it stays that way under load.

Ergonomics and Comfort

For something that looks this wild, the Mission R is surprisingly comfortable.

The grips are soft and very grippy, and in my hands they felt like an Alcantara-style material. Either way, the grip and comfort are both excellent, especially for longer sessions.

Button placement is also very well thought out. Most controls are within easy reach, including the two buttons on the back of the grips. The thumb encoders are thin, but they still feel good to use, and they are placed in a way that makes sense once you start driving.

The only control I did not love is the center encoders. To me, they lack a bit of resistance, and that makes them feel slightly less premium than the rest of the wheel. It is not a deal breaker, but it is something I noticed pretty quickly.

One important detail is that this wheel prioritizes realism. Compared to wheels designed purely around sim racing convenience, you lose a few things, like multi-position joysticks that make menu navigation easy. That is the tradeoff with replica-style wheels. You gain authenticity, but sometimes you lose a bit of practicality. That being said, it does replicate the real Mission R wheel extremely faithfully.

Buttons and Inputs

There is a lot to like here, but also one complaint that I cannot ignore for the price.

The encoders feel great. The thumb and rotary encoders are aluminum, and they feel like proper high-end hardware. The face buttons are backlit, which looks awesome in a dark room and adds to the whole futuristic vibe.

However, the buttons themselves are plastic. On a $1,300 wheel, that is not what I want to see. They also have a slightly underwhelming feel compared to other high-end wheels I have used.

Another realism-driven compromise is labeling. These buttons come pre-labeled, so you cannot easily re-label them with a sticker sheet the way you can on many sim-first wheels. Again, that is authenticity winning over customization.

The Curved OLED Display

The screen is the main reason this wheel exists.

At 5.4 inches, it is one of the biggest displays I have seen on a steering wheel. It is curved, it sits right in your line of sight, and it is genuinely functional because everything is large and easy to read.

The display is a 720p OLED panel with a 60 Hz refresh rate, and in my testing it looked sharp, smooth, and responsive with no obvious lag. Having that much information directly in front of you is a real advantage, especially in endurance racing or when you want to run a cleaner monitor setup without an external dash.

Customization is where things get a little mixed.

Right now, there is no SimHub compatibility, at least not yet. That matters, because SimHub is still the gold standard for display customization in sim racing. Moza lets you tweak what is displayed through Pit House, but I found a lot of their presets to feel unfinished. Some layouts do not use the whole screen, and others just look like they need a polish pass.

The good news is that this feels like a software problem, not a hardware problem. Moza can fix presets and expand tools through updates, and they are already offering a way to build custom layouts. If Moza continues updating this wheel’s screen options, it could end up being a much stronger overall experience over time.

Another cool detail is that the screen is a touchscreen. You can scroll through telemetry options in real time. That is objectively a flex. The only downside is fingerprints, because yes, you will leave them everywhere.

On-Track Feel and Performance

On track, I have had a genuinely good time with the Mission R wheel.

It feels sturdy, the quick release connection is tight with no play, and the wheel does not flex under normal driving. The wheel is a bit longer than I personally prefer, but not enough to ruin the experience. It is still comfortable and easy to drive with.

The biggest consideration is weight. This is a heavy wheel. Not the heaviest I have ever used, but heavy enough that you really want a capable wheelbase behind it. If you put this on a weaker base, you risk losing detail and responsiveness because the base is fighting the wheel’s mass.

The good news is that you are not locked into one ecosystem. With Moza’s universal hub kit, this wheel can be used with third-party wheelbases. That matters a lot at this price point, because nobody wants to spend $1,300 on a wheel and then feel trapped into a specific platform forever. Paddle Module and Clutch Paddles

The paddle module is CNC aluminum and includes both paddle shifters and clutch paddles.

The paddle shifters use a magnetic mechanism and feel decent. They are also a bit loud, and they do not have the premium, satisfying tactility I expect from the very best wheels in this price bracket.

The clutch paddles are fine. They have some resistance, but the travel is short. It works, it is usable, and it is not a deal breaker. It is just not the best paddle and clutch feel I have experienced at this level.

Who Is This Actually For?

Most sim racers are never going to buy a $1,300 steering wheel. That is just reality.

But I still think there is a real market for this wheel. It is the type of product that turns heads at events, becomes the centerpiece of a high-end rig, and gets shown off to friends the moment they walk into your setup.

From a pure sim racing practicality point of view, it is not perfect. The button feel could be better, and the screen software still needs work. Also, there are other high-end wheels that can deliver the same competitive functionality for less money.

What you are paying for here is the experience. The design, the uniqueness, the screen, the replica feel, and the fact that it looks like the future.

So no, it is not for everyone. But if you have deep pockets and you want the most futuristic wheel currently available, the Mission R is a very cool piece of kit to have in a sim racing setup.

The wheel is heavy, so it pairs best with a strong direct drive base, and the paddle feel, while decent, does not fully match what I expect from the top tier at this price.
